RYA Yachtmaster Coastal vs RYA Yachtmaster Offshore: Which course is right for you?

Writer: Hugo MillsHugo Mills

If you're looking to advance your sailing skills, you may have come across the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications. Both certifications open up new sailing opportunities, but they cater to different levels of experience.

This article explores the key differences to help you decide which is best suited to your goals.

What is the difference between RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore?

The Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate is ideal for sailors navigating coastal or protected waters, typically within 20 miles of the shore. This certification covers essential skills, including navigation, night sailing, maritime rules, safety procedures, mooring, pilotage, and passage planning.

The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is the go-to qualification for sailors who want to demonstrate their offshore experience and capability. It builds on the knowledge gained in the Yachtmaster Coastal certification, with additional hands-on experience in crewing and skippering offshore.

Ideal for skippers who want formal recognition of their ability to handle a yacht beyond coastal waters. Once qualified, a Yachtmaster Offshore can skipper vessels up to 150 miles from shore.

How much prior experience do I need before taking each course?

  • Coastal: Requires at least 800 nautical miles, 30 days at sea and 12 night hours. You should already have a solid grasp of navigation, yacht handling, and passage planning.

  • Offshore: Requires 2,500 nautical miles, 50 days at sea and 5 passages over 60 miles, with at least 2 as skipper. This qualification demands significant prior experience and strong leadership skills.

What does the practical exam involve?

Both qualifications require a practical assessment where you demonstrate skippering skills.

  • Coastal Exam: Tests your ability to navigate and manage a crew in nearshore conditions, including passage planning and handling tidal waters.

  • Offshore Exam: Requires more advanced skills, including open-sea navigation, night sailing, emergency procedures, and decision-making in unpredictable conditions.

What kind of boats can I skipper with each qualification?

  • Coastal: Allows you to skipper in familiar waters, typically up to 60 miles from a safe haven. Ideal for coastal cruising and shorter crossings.

  • Offshore: Enables you to undertake longer voyages, including ocean passages, making it suitable for leisure cruising, professional sailing, and yacht deliveries.

Which course is right for me?

  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal is ideal if you want to improve your skippering skills, focusing on shorter trips with moderate challenges.

  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is the right choice if you have extensive experience and wish to pursue offshore sailing or a professional career in yachting.
